KOTA TINGGI: Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin today officially launched the Pengerang Local Authority, which will oversee the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) industrial zone and its surrounding areas.
The jurisdiction of the new local authority – which is the state’s 16th local authority – covers an area of 128,830 hectares carved out of land previously under Lembaga Bandaran Johor Tenggara (LBJT) and the Kota Tinggi District Council.
The Local Authority will be administered by the Johor Corporation (JCorp).
Khaled said JCorp was chosen to administer the new local authority based on its efficient track record in leading the developments and taking care of Pasir Gudang for a period of 32 years until 2009.
He said the state government's decision to allow JCorp to set up the Pengerang Local Authority was to ensure the area would be administered based on a corporate culture of excellence.
"This is more so as Pengerang needs more local and international firms to invest in the PIPC, which is slated to start operations in 2019.
"With the development of the Pengerang Industrial Park (PIP) by JCorp, it is estimated that 266 factories will be set up, offering 15,846 jobs," said Khaled in his speech during the launch of the Pengerang Local Authority at its building in Bandar Penawar here.
