Op Selamat launches pioneering programme for accident victims on Sg Besi-Seremban highway

PETALING JAYA: Motorists who meet with accidents and suffer no injuries on the Sg Besi-Seremban highway no longer have to lodge reports at police stations, but can do so at their accident location immediately.

This is now possible, as a team of investigation officers will be stationed along the highway to respond to accident cases.

Road users involved in minor incidents that do not result in physical injury will be attended to by investigation officers once they contact the emergency line or 999.

Sketches of the accident area and reports would be lodged on-the-spot by the investigation officer.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the system is undergoing a pilot project and will be tested during Op Selamat 10/2017, which begins tomorrow.

"This means motorists who are involved in accidents would not need to go to a station to lodge a report. We want to ease everyone's journey, so for small accidents which do not involve injuries, they can just do it online (through the investigation officer)," he said.

The sketch of the accident site and copy of the police report could be obtained from the investigation officer straightaway.

Khalid said the pilot project will be analysed to see if it would be beneficial to the public.

The top cop was speaking to reporters after launching Op Selamat 10/2017, which will end on Feb 5.

Police, together with Plus Bhd, and other enforcement agencies, are collaborating to create awareness on road safety, reduce road accidents and prevent criminal activity during the festive season.

Khalid said last year, fatalities from road accidents increased from 6,072 in 2015 to 7,152 last year.

From the amount, 60 per cent involved motorcyclists.
