Malacca airport runway to be expanded, ready for larger planes

MALACCA: The Malacca International Airport will see an expansion of its runway from 2,150 metres to 2,500 metres to cater for larger aircrafts such as Airbus A320 and Boeing 747-400.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the state executive council meeting today approved for the expansion of the runway and the upgrade of the existing building without acquiring additional residential and commercial land.

"The option not to acquire more lands was after a briefing by the Jurutera Perunding Zaaba Sdn. Bhd.

"We will be engaging with aviation consultants to look into the expansion of runway by 350 metres next to Taman Angkasa Nuri in Durian Tunggal," he told reporters after chairing the state executive council meeting here today.

He added that the state government was also looking at upgrading the existing airport building from a single storey building to either a one-and-a-half storey building or two-storey building.

Upgrading works would begin next early next year.
