JOHOR BARU: A Penang-born stewardess for Singapore Airlines (SIA) was found dead in her hotel room in San Francisco, California in the US on Tuesday night, several hours before she was supposed to board a flight back to Singapore.
The Straits Times reported that Vanessa Yeap, 38, was found lifeless when colleagues checked up on her after she did not appear at the hotel lobby as the crew were checking out.
The woman, who has been a stewardess with SIA for the past 16 years had been a leading stewardess on SIA flight SQ2 that departed Singapore last Saturday to San Francisco with a transit in Hong Kong.
She was scheduled to work on flight SQ1 flight out of San Francisco at 1am on Wednesday.
“When Yeap did not appear at the lobby, colleagues went up to check and found her dead in her room. They tried to resuscitate her but could not revive her,” reported the Straits Times.
A cabin crew member, who was not on the same flight as Yeap, told the newspaper that the stewardess was not feeling well when the cabin crew arrived in San Francisco two days before the return flight.
An SIA statement issued to the newspaper also confirmed Yeap’s death.
“We can confirm with regret that one of our female cabin crew was found deceased in her hotel room in San Francisco on Feb 1, 2017 (Singapore time).
“Our immediate priority is to provide the necessary assistance to the family of the crew member. As the case is under the investigation of the local authorities, we are unable to share any further details,” the statement had read.
It was reported that Yeap’s elder brother was on his way to San Francisco to claim his sister’s remains.
