Woman bound, gagged and left for dead in Klang river over alleged affair

SHAH ALAM: Two youths, angered over an Indonesian woman’s alleged affair with one of their family members, decided to mete out their own misguided brand of justice by attempting to kill her.

The woman, 37, her hands and legs bound, was stuffed into a gunny sack and dropped from a flyover into the Klang river on Monday.

However, an eagle-eyed motorist spotted the woman and rescued her from drowning.

Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat said the duo, aged 20 and 21, had picked up the woman from her house in Taman Seri Muda at 10.30am on Monday, under the pretext of bringing her to get medication.

“Once in the car, one of them assaulted her with an iron rod. Her mouth was taped, and her limbs bound before she was stuffed into a gunny sack.

“The duo then stopped their van along a flyover above the Klang river, and dropped the sack 20-metres down into the water,” he told a press conference at the Shah Alam police headquarters today.

Shafien said the youths had accused the woman of having an affair with one of their relatives. Both of them were unemployed and did not have any criminal record.

Shafien said the woman struggled in the water for about 30 minutes before a motorist spotted her. The passer-by then alerted the Fire and Rescue Department as well as the police, who rescued her.

Rescuers say the woman was half-conscious when she was brought out from the water. The woman, a factory worker, is now being warded at the Shah Alam Hospital.

Shafien said police arrested the two men at their rented homes in Padang Jawa around 12 hours later. The van was also recovered.

The duo have been remanded until February 13. The case is being investigated for attempted murder.
