Malaysia is world's sixth best place to retire, say international experts

KUALA LUMPUR: What do Spain, Portugal and Malaysia have in common?

It turns out that they are all ranked among the best destinations to retire for the expatriate community.

Malaysia is ranked sixth in the Annual Global Retirement Index, compiled by the experts at International Living (IL), edging out the likes of Portugal, Nicaragua and Spain.

According IL, an authority on global retirement and relocation opportunities, Malaysia is known for its, “878 idyllic islands, stunning beaches and untouched rainforests.”

The Index highlighted the low cost of living, high quality health care available in Malaysia, as well as the fact that it is home to a multi-cultural population that include Malays, Chinese, Indian, Europeans and Americans.

“The food is not just first class, but world class — and the shopping in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, where I live, is to die for,” Keith Hockton, IL Malaysia correspondent was quoted as saying.

Malaysia however is no stranger to being listed as favourable destinations among global citizens. Kuala Lumpur was ranked ninth in Asia in the recent QS Best Student Cities 2017.

A combination of exceptional cuisine, pristine natural forests, friendly locals and modern infrastructure with world-class connectivity are often cited as main reasons why Malaysia remains a favourite among the rest of the world.

Meanwhile, Mexico, Panama and Ecuador were in the top three, respectively, in the Annual Global Retirement Index list, published on the Forbes website.
