CYBERJAYA: Pas will adopt a wait-and-see attitude on the plan by Barisan Nasional (BN) to table its own amendment to the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (also known as Act 355) in Parliament, said president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
He said Pas will study the details of the draft to be proposed by BN, which have yet to be revealed.
“We need to read the draft by BN and see if it is different from what we are hoping to achieve.
“In matters concerning the interests of Muslims, we hope to work well together with others,” he said.
Hadi also reiterated that Pas’ approach is to ensure that the enhancement of the Shariah Courts' powers will not affect non-Muslims.
He was referring to reports that the government will take over Hadi’s contentious hudud-linked Private Member's Bill, and make it a government bill when it is tabled in the present Parliament sitting.
Hadi was speaking to reporters during a convention for professionals at Garden Residences today.
Act 355 was moved by Abdul Hadi on May 26.
The bill seeks to amend the Act to empower Islamic courts to enforce punishment, except for the death penalty, as provided in Shariah law, for Islamic offences listed under state jurisdiction in the Federal Constitution.
