JOHOR BARU: A 38-year-old Sri Lankan man has been arrested for allegedly causing hurt, committing robbery and for assault with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman on two separate occasions.
Johor Baru Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Taib Ahmad said that in the first incident at 7.14am on Sunday, members of the public found a woman in a semi-conscious state with facial and body injuries.
The police were alerted by the public, who saw her by the roadside at Jalan Padi 1 in Bandar Baru Uda.
The woman, 50, who had bruises from being punched, was rushed to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital here.
She was believed to been walking to a factory nearby when a man confronted her and robbed her of her mobile phone, RM80 cash and an ATM card.
In the next case, which took place the next day, another woman, 27, was at a bus stop near a bank at 4am when a man, believed to be the same suspect, approached her and asked her to sit next to him.
When she refused, the man allegedly grabbed her by the throat and dragged her to nearby bushes. It is learnt that the man had attempted to molest the woman.
However, a passer-by noticed the incident and yelled at the man, causing him to flee.
"The victim suffered slight injuries and did not want medical attention," Mohd Taib said, adding that the suspect did not manage to get any of her belongings.
The suspect was arrested the same day. He is being remanded for seven days to facilitate investigations.
He is being investigated under Section 354 and 394 of the Penal Code.
