MALACCA: A senior politician with the title 'Datuk' was charged at the magistrate's court in Ayer Keroh here today for allegedly taking methamphetamine last year.
Datuk Mohamed Mustafa Abdul Kadir, 56, claimed trial when the charge was read to him before magistrate Mohd Firdaus Saleh.
He was charged with taking methamphetamine at about 6pm on Aug 1, 2016 after testing positive for the substance at the Malacca police headquarters in Bukit Beruang here.
The offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 provides a jail sentence of up to two years and a maximum fine of RM5,000 or both.
Magistrate Firdaus granted RM2,000 bail in one surety and set April 27 for mention, pending submission of documents.
Prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Shazreen Nadia Saaban while the accused was represented by counsel Salmi Hamdan Sabran.
