Lorry on fire sparks three-kilometre traffic jam

SUNGAI PETANI: A lorry transporting plywood caught fire at KM95.6 of the North-South Expressway near Gurun last night, causing a three-kilometre traffic jam along the north-bound stretch.

A state Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they received a distress call about 9.51pm.

Firemen from the Sungai Petani and Guar Chempedak stations took about 20 minutes to control the fire, which destroyed 75 per cent of the cargo.

It is understood that the lorry driver escaped injury. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
