IPOH: Police shot dead two Mamak Gang members during an exchange of gunfire at Tanah Hitam, Chemor yesterday.
The incident took place about 9.30pm when the duo, high on police’s wanted list, tried to flee from police inspection.
Perak acting police chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said, acting on a tip-off, a police team from the Perak and Penang police headquarters' Serious Crimes Division (D9) unit had spotted the two men inside a gray Toyota Vios in Tanjung Rambutan.
“When the team ordered the men to stop their vehicle for checks, the men sped off.
“In their haste to escape, the suspects’ car skidded and crashed at Tanah Hitam. Instead of surrendering, one of the men exited the vehicle and fired several shots towards the police, while the other one pointed a parang to a policeman.
"The team returned fire and killed the men on the spot,” Hasnan told a press conference at the state police headquarters here this morning.
He said further checks on the car unearthed a .38 revolver, two live bullets, four magazines, four machetes and a police vest.
Hasnan said checks later revealed that the duo, known as "Misai" and "Ganesh", were members of the notorious Mamak Gang.
The men were also on police's wanted list for 28 cases in Perak, Penang, Kedah, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca, for crimes such as burglaries, robberies and car theft.
