Woman files motion to speed up husband's appeal against POCA

KUALA LUMPUR: A pregnant woman has filed a motion to expedite the hearing of her husband's appeal against his 21-day detention under the Prevention of Crime Act (POCA) 2013 over an alleged forex scam.

The application made by A. Magaswarie on behalf of her husband R. Vishnu Moorthy was filed at the High Court registry here through Messrs Kumar Hashimah & Co today.

In the certificate of urgency, the applicant (Vishnu Moorthy) is seeking for his appeal case to be disposed as soon as possible contending that his detention under the Act was unlawful.

His lawyer, P. Uthayakumar said his client's wife who is six months into pregnancy was denied the rights to see her husband.

"Our appeal is also on the constitutional points especially under Article 5 (2) of the Federal Constitution on person's right to liberty," he said when met by reporters after the filing.

Vishnu Moorthy, a salesman who is now detained at the Jalan Tun Razak police station here filed a notice of appeal to challenge his 21-day detention under POCA issued by magistrate Mahyuddin Mohamad Som on March 29.
