BALING: An unemployed woman was charged at the Baling Magistrate's Court today with driving under the influence of drugs and causing the death of a senior police officer and his wife.
Yeow Chiew Fern, 37, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charge under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which was read before Magistrate Mohd Izmi Ibrahim.
Yeow was accused of driving a pick-up truck at Kampung Telok Teduri, Jalan Baru Baling and causing the death of Baling district Police Narcotic Investigation Department chief Assistant Superintendent Mohd Noor Mat Yaub, 38, and his wife Suriya Ab Rahman, 37, on April 18.
She faces up to 10 years' jail and maximum fines of RM20,000 if found guilty.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Inspector Halina Othman prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
The court set bail at RM8,000 with one surety following the accused's appeal.
Ismi later fixed May 30 for mention to enable Yeow to appoint a lawyer.
The accused's driving licence is suspended until her case is concluded.
Earlier, the accused who was clad in a purple T-shirt and black trousers, arrived at the court with a police escort about 9am.
She was seen calm and chatting with other detainees in the court while waiting for the proceedings to begin.
It was reported that the victims were on the way to send their four children, aged between six and 11, to school when their car was hit from behind.
The children survived the crash albeit with serious injuries.
