Melaka Tengah OCPD picked up by MACC

MELAKA: A district police chief was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) here, last night.

State police chief Datuk Abd Jalil Hassan when contacted, confirmed the detention of Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Shaikh Abdul Adzis Shaikh Abdullah.

"I can only confirm that Melaka Tengah (police chief) is being investigated by Putrajaya (MACC officers).

"I have yet to confirm Jasin (district police chief)," he said in response to a text message here.

Shaikh Adzis is believed to have been arrested in connection with a protection racket being run by some of his men and others in the Jasin police district.

The rogue policemen were allegedly collecting payments from illegal gambling dens and massage parlours in Melaka. In return, these establishments were protected from police action.

Earlier yesterday, three of these rogue cops - two assistant superintendents and an inspector - from the Melaka Tengah and Jasin police districts, were arrested.

Also picked up by MACC officers were three civilians, including a man who acted as middleman between the policemen and the operators of the illegal outlets.

MACC investigators today obtained six-day remand orders against them in Putrajaya.

Shaikh Adzis is expected to be produced before a magistrate, also in Putrajaya, later today.

It is learnt that MACC will also seek a remand order against two other high-ranking police officers. However, their identities have yet to be confirmed.
