MIRI: Initial investigation into the murder of a woman, who was shot dead by her police inspector husband was said to be cause by personal issues.
Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor said the suspect, who was arrested about six hours after the murder, has been remanded for a week to facilitate investigation into the case.
Mazlan said the suspect, in his 30s, would also be sent to undergo a medical examination to check on his mental health condition.
“We are checking on whether the suspect is suffering from depression or other mental problems,” Mazlan told reporters this during his visit to the Miri police headquarters here today.
On a question, disputing the relationship status between the victim identified as Siti Nadirah Abdullah, 33, and the suspect from Perlis, Mazlan said the matter is being verified by the police.
“Based on our records, the suspect is a divorcee and this led us to assume the deceased is his girlfriend.
“We, however, believed that the suspect had secretly married the victim but he did not declare his marriage to our management.
“A member of the force must declare his or her marriage, supported by wedding certificate,” said Mazlan.
Netizens disputed the relationship between the victim and suspect when a social media posting suggesting that the woman is the girlfriend of the police inspector went viral on Facebook.
The victim’s 62-year-old mother, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, insisted that her daughter had married the suspect when met at the Serian Hospital yesterday.
Mazlan could also not confirm the claims made by the victim’s mother, who said her daughter was two-month pregnant.
The suspect attached with a police station in the sub-district of Belaga had attended a meeting at the Sarawak police headquarters in Kuching prior to the murder.
He was alleged to have shot the victim twice, once on the neck and the other, on the chest, at the latter’s house in Kampung Kakai, Serian near Kuching at 3.15pm.
The suspect, in his 30s, fled the scene in a Proton Saga but was apprehended at a supermarket in Matang Jaya, Matang later on the same day.
