KUCHING: Forty people, including a school dropout, were nabbed over the past two weeks for their involvement in illegal gambling in the state.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department Chief Datuk Dev Kumar said the suspected gamblers and gambling den workers were aged between 14 to 53, 10 of whom are women.
“The 14-year-old boy, who is a school dropout, was arrested at an illegal lottery (4D) counter in Spaoh, Betong,” he said in a statement today.
A total of 20 raids were conducted against illegal 4D operations, which led to the arrest of 22 people. Other items such as mobile phones, printers, calculators, betting slips, stationery and cash amounting to RM5,046 were seized.
Meanwhile, 13 people were nabbed for cyber gambling in four different locations in Miri, Kuching and Betong.
“Police confiscated 37 computers and tablets used for cyber gambling,” Dev said.
“We also arrested five people for participating in ‘Holo’ gambling behind a cafe in Limbang,” he added.
All suspects will be investigated under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
“This is part of our ongoing effort to fight illegal gambling throughout the state, especially during the festive seasons,” he said.
