Paralympian cyclists crash: Hilux driver lodges report, taken to Kuala Selangor for questioning

KUALA SELANGOR: Police have detained the pick-up truck driver, who rammed into four national paralympian cyclists at the KL-Kuala Selangor Expressway (Latar) this morning.

The 46-year-old man was picked up after he lodged a police report at Kampung Baru Subang police station several hours after the incident.

He has been taken to the Kuala Selangor traffic police station for questioning.

Kuala Selangor police chief Superintendent Ruslan Abdullah confirmed that the pick-up truck driver has been taken to the district to facilitate investigation.

"We have opened an investigation into the case under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"We have also identified the driver, who had lodged a police report on the incident. The driver is being brought here for further action," he said in a statement.

Section 43 of the Act stipulates that anyone found guilty of driving without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other road users, shall be punished with a minimum RM4,000 fine but not exceeding RM10,000.

Those found guilty under the law are also liable to a maximum of 12 months jail.

On the incident, Ruslan said it occurred when seven cyclists with their coach and manager were conducting a training which started from Kampung Pandan Sports Complex in Kuala Lumpur about 9am.

"The athletes on tandem bicycles were already on their way back to Kampung Pandan, when four of them on two bicycles, and their coach on a motorcycle, were rammed by a Toyota Hilux at KM12.6 of the highway.

"Police believed that the Hilux was changing lane to get into the Bandar Tasik Puteri exit when it ploughed into the victims.

"The victims, aged between 19 and 42, sustained serious injuries in the crash, and were rushed to Sungai Buloh Hospital." he said.
