IPOH: An 18-year-old mechanic was fined RM5,000 by the Sessions Court for offering RM50 bribe to a policeman when caught not wearing a crash helmet.
Swe Kah Fai pleaded guilty to offering the bribe to Lance Corporal Mohd Farid Ahmad in front of SRJKC Hwa Lian, Pasir Bogak, Pangkor, at 2pm on April 18 as an inducement not to issue a summon.
In mitigation, lawyer Kenny Lai Choe Ken from the National Legal Aid Foundation, told the court his client was a first offender.
"His arrest and remand in the lockup is already a lesson for him," he said, adding that the youth earned RM600 a month.
DPP Nurul Wahida Jalaluddin from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) asked that the court to impose a deterrent sentence since corruption was widespread.
Judge S. Indra Nehru ordered the accused to undergo five months' jail if he did not settle the fine.
