Navy 'torture': Two Navy men remanded over murder probe

MANJUNG: Two Royal Malaysian Navy men are being remanded to facilitate a probe into the death of two navy sailors at the Sungai Wangi detention unit in Sitiawan on Sept 29.

Magistrate Ainul Bashiirah Dona Don Biyajid ordered a seven-day remand until Oct 16 against the duo, aged 29 and 37.

The case is being investigated for murder.

They were previously detained under Section 325 and 506 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt and criminal intimidation.

The men arrived at the Seri Manjung magistrate's court at 8.30am and were brought out an hour later.

Police had earlier obtained a remand order on five men on Oct 1 and 2 to facilitate the investigation into the case. The remand for three of them ends on Saturday, while the remand for the remaining two expires on Sunday.

During the Sept 29 incident, Nik Muhammad Baihaqy Nik Mat, 28, and Muhammad Lailatuliman Mohd Sukri, 26, who were of Able Seaman rank, had complained of exhaustion while undergoing training at the detention unit.

They were given immediate treatment after vomiting and suffering shortness of breath, but later died.

Post-mortem reports revealed that they succumbed to lung bleeding, believed to be due to torture.

Two other navy men who were undergoing training at the unit then lodged police reports after being alleged assaulted by naval military policemen.
