Retrial verdict for man accused of murdering Arab-Malaysian Bank founder set for Oct 27

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here set Oct 27 to deliver its verdict on the case of a former tow truck driver charged with murdering Arab-Malaysian Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi four years ago.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Ab Karim Ab Rahman set the date after hearing submissions from Deputy Public Prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin and defence counsel Datuk Michael K. L. Chee at the end of the defence’s case today.

Koong Swee Kwan, 48, was charged with murdering Najadi, 75, by gunning him down; and the attempted murder of Najadi’s wife, Cheong Mei Kuen, at the parking lot of the Kuan Yin Temple near Lorong Ceylon here between 1.30pm and 2pm on July 29, 2013.

Koong was tried and convicted by the High Court in Sept 2014 and was sentenced to death for murdering Hussain; and 18 years’ jail for attempting to murder Cheong.

However, on Dec 14, 2016, the Federal Court’s five-man bench, chaired by then Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin, set aside Koong’s conviction and ordered a retrial on the grounds that the initial trial had been prejudicial to him.
