Penang lorry driver tries to ram RTD vehicle in bid to escape inspection; is duly nabbed

BUTTERWORTH: A lorry driver refused to stop his vehicle for inspection and tried to knock down a Road Transport Department van carrying four enforcement officers in his attempt to flee, at Jalan Chain Feri here on Thursday.

The incident occurred at 12.30pm when the enforcement officers, who were patrolling the area, noticed the lorry laden with mud at a traffic light junction heading towards Taman Bagan.

“The RTD officers sounded the siren and instructed the lorry driver to pull over for inspection.

“However, the driver refused to stop. (He) beat the traffic light and drove towards the construction site of a housing area in Taman Bagan,” Seberang Perai Utara district police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said.

The lorry driver had also applied sudden brake manoeuvres and attempted to knock into the RTD vehicle upon realising he was being trailed from behind.

Subsequently, the suspect stopped the lorry, but refused to alight from the vehicle, forcing the enforcement officers to contact the police for assistance, he said.

Noorzainy said the 44-year-old man was arrested and will be remanded for four days to facilitate investigations. — BERNAMA
