MELAKA: A mechanic was taken to the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court here today for allegedly possessing several stolen lighters. The thefts occurred early last month.
Mohd Fitri Mohd Hatta, 31, of Pulau Gadong, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read in front of judge Norma Ismail.
He was charged with possession of nine units of multi-coloured lighters with KK logo emblazoned on them.
The emblem proves the lighters were stolen from KK Supermart Superstore Sdn Bhd.
The offense was allegedly committed in a flat in Lorong Pandan at 3.30pm on Feb 8, 2018.
The accused was charged under Section 412 of the Penal Code and punishable under the same code, which carries a jail sentence of up to 20 years, and is liable to a fine.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mazuin Hashim asked for a bail of RM20,000 for the accused.
However, the accused, who did not have a lawyer, appealed for the bail amount to be reduced as he had to care for his elderly parents who were disabled.
The court reduced the bail to RM15,000 and fixed April 3 as a future date and for the accused to hire a lawyer.
