SHAH ALAM: The sister-in-law of the late Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan has been released from remand after the High Court allowed the review application to revoke the four-day remand period imposed on her.
Her husband was also released, one day before the remand period was supposed to end, which is tomorrow.
The release order was given by Judge Datuk Ab Karim Ab Rahman after he allowed the review application from the couple’s lawyers Hisyam Teh Poh Teik and LS Leonard.
Ab Karim also ordered for both of them to be released at 5pm today.
“The remand period was too long and police didn’t give a good reason for their arrest,” Ab Karim said.
Earlier, Leonard argued that the application was made due to several reasons, including the unnecessary arrest of both his clients.
“Other than that, we believed the arrest was just a desperate move and not for getting statements. The whole process is wrong,” he said.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Nazneen Zulkifli represented the respondent.
On Monday, Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court assistant registrar Hairul Azhar Mohd Ishak allowed the four-day remand for the couple to assist in Nazrin’s murder investigation.
Previously, Nazrin’s widow Samirah Muzaffar and her ex-husband were remanded for seven days. Also remanded were Nazrin’s stepsons, aged 14 and 16.
Nazrin was found dead after his room at his home in Mutiara Damansara, caught fire on June 14.
Initial reports said the fire may have been caused by his exploding mobile phone, which was charging by his bedside.
However, following a report by the Fire and Rescue department, as well as results of the post-mortem examination, the case was later classified as murder.
