KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak today voiced his disagreement with the mandatory asset declaration for all members of parliament, including members of the opposition.
The former prime minister said it was unfair to compel opposition MPs to declare their assets.
The Pekan member of parliament argued that some assets did not come from their allowances as parliamentarians.
“We, the opposition, are not part of the executive body.
“There are also other bodies that could investigate (the assets) if there were any irregularities.
“We would have other sources of income, with some being lawyers or architects.
“Hence, it is unfair if the other sources of income are transferred into the same account and declared as assets.
“The declaration is based on our income as members of parliament,” he told reporters in Parliament today.
He said there could also be other concerns such as security risks.
On Monday, Dewan Rakyat speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof called for a voice vote and passed the motion to compel all MPs and senators, and their family members to declare their assets after five hours of debate.
