MACC arrests Riza Aziz

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's stepson Riza Aziz this afternoon.

MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya when contacted confirmed the arrest, adding that Riza was released on MACC bail.

"He will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court tomorrow under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001," she said.

Earlier, sources said Riza who is also the owner of Red Granite Pictures would be charged with five counts of money laundering from Good Star Ltd, a company linked to fugitive financier Low Taek Jho or Jho Low.

It was previously reported that Malaysia received the first transfer of funds linked to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) amounting to US$57 million (RM236 million) seized by the United States of America's Department of Justice (DOJ) from Red Granite.

The matter was confirmed by Attorney-General Tommy Thomas who said the first transfer of funds was obtained via seizure of assets linked to 1MDB under the DOJ's Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative.

Riza, 49, is Red Granite's chief executive, the company that produced "Wolf of Wall Street" starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Previously the MACC called Riza in for a total number of four times beginning July 3 last year to obtain his statement regarding 1MDB.
