Man sent to the gallows for murder

KUALA TERENGGANU: A widower with three children was sentenced to death by the High Court here today for killing his village mate by mowing him down five years ago.

Judge Datuk Zainal Azman Ab Aziz made the decision after the accused, Azami Mohamad, 45, was found guilty of the charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code (KK) for murder.

According to the charge, the accused who worked as a lorry driver was charged with killing Rohadi Zakaria, 49, on the Kampung Jelapang highway in Sungai Tong, Setiu, at 6pm on October 2, 2014.

He also faces two more charges under Section 307 KK for attempted murder and Section 182 KK for making a false report.

The accused allegedly attempted to mow down Zakaria Taib, 48, using a Proton Gen 2 car at the same address, time and location.

On the third charge, he was accused of making a false report at the Permaisuri police station, Setiu at 6.29 pm on Oct 2, 2014.

In his report, the accused claimed he was arrested by two men using a knife and rammed into them while trying to escape.

For the second and third counts, the court sentenced him to 10 years in prison and six months' jail respectively.

However, the court ordered the jail sentences to run concurrently from the date of arrest on Oct 2, 2014.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fadhli Mahmud prosecuted while the accused was represented by Harshaan Zamani.

According to media reports, a man was killed and his friend seriously injured when they were mowed down by someone they knew over a cattle sales misunderstanding.

Prior to the incident, both victims were said to have quarrelled with the suspect at a coffee shop.

On their way home, they were chased and run down by the suspect.

The impact caused the two to fall onto the middle of the road. The suspect then made a U-turn and mowed them down again before fleeing.
