Woman loses RM11,060 in online loan scam

KUANTAN: A woman in Pahang, who wanted to borrow RM15,000 after reading an advertisement on Instagram, is now RM11,060 poorer.

Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Superintendant Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof said the incident on Sept 23 occured when the woman, who is a logistics coordinator, came across a loan advertisement on Instagram.

When she inquired about the scheme, a man, who claimed to be a representative of the company mentioned in the advertisement, contacted the woman.

“He asked her to make payments for legal fees and another fee to activate an account.

“He also asked for a fee to cancel her loan with other companies as well as a deposit for the new loan she was asking for.

“The victim made payments in stages, from the Sept 24 to 28, amounting to RM11,060 through online banking.

“After she finished making all the payments, the suspect did not give her the loan he promised,” said Wazir.
