NGOs lodge police reports over Facebook posts insulting the Queen

KUANTAN: Several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have lodged police reports against the owner of the Facebook account "Nengtung Ting" and several other social media users for posting comments deemed insulting to the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.

The NGOs urged the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to immediately track down and nab the posters, and punish them accordingly.

Pahang Youth Council president Wan Emril Nizam Wan Embong described the Facebook postings as “rude” and “not to be tolerated” as they include insults aimed at the monarchy.

“This is an irresponsible act which has hurt the feelings of the people, especially those in Pahang. This matter cannot be viewed lightly and police should take action against the individual with the Facebook account Nengtung Ting and other users who have insulted the Queen.

“Stern action should be taken to serve as a reminder to other social media users to think before they upload any posting," he said after lodging a police report at the Kuantan district police station, along with representatives from Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) and the Kuantan Youth Council.

Meanwhile, Kuantan's Felda Malaysia Youth Council information chief Asrullah Affendi Abdullah, urged the authorities to view the insults to the royal institution seriously, and to monitor messages on social media so that irresponsible postings can be curbed.

“Some social media users are going overboard with their comments, and as our loyalty to King and country is paramount, we will not tolerate those who are rude to the royal institution," he said.

On Jan 8, a Facebook user described Tunku Azizah as "nenek sihir rasis" in Mandarin – believed to be in response to the Queen's move to use Jawi on her Twitter account, following controversy over its teaching in vernacular schools.

Several other Facebook users joined in posting sensitive remarks against the Queen.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, local poet Teo Wei Sing said that people should think rationally and draw the line before making incendiary comments.

He pointed out that Tunku Azizah is the person responsible for setting up the Tunku Azizah Fertility Foundation to help childless couples, regardless of race, to conceive; wished her friends happy Chinese New Year in Cantonese; cooked tasty meals for people of all races during the recent floods; and goes down to the ground to help people from all walks of life who are affected by accidents or disasters.
