KUALA LUMPUR: Four men were arrested late on Friday over the industrial effluent pollution incident in the Sungai Gong Industrial Area in Rawang, Selangor.
The suspects, who are brothers and managers of a factory alleged to be the source of the pollution, were arrested during an operation carried out from 11pm to 12.30am last night, Bernama reported.
"The four suspects, aged between 50 and 60, were either picked up from their homes (in Selayang) or detained when they reported to the Gombak district police station," said Selangor police chief Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin.
The four were transported this morning to the Selayang Court, where they remanded for six days beginning today, to assist in ongoing investigations.
The case is being probed under Section 430 of the Penal Code.
The pollution - believed to be used engine oil and other solvents - forced the shutdown of the Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant Phase 1, 2 and 3 and the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plant, leaving 1.2 million water account holders in the Klang Valley with dry taps since Thursday.
Yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the factory under suspicion was sealed and compounded with immediate effect.
He said the factory is believed to have released solvent into Sungai Gong, which flows into Sungai Sembah, one of the main tributaries of Sungai Selangor.
Residents in 1,292 areas in the Klang Valley, Petaling, Klang/Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat have been affected by the unscheduled water supply disruption.
Water supply has yet to be restored.
