Religious affairs minister to address meat cartel issue on Wednesday

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri is gathering information on reports that a syndicate is allegedly importing non-certified meat and selling them as halal products in Malaysia.

"I'm gathering the relevant information today. I need accurate information pertaining to the issue. We don't need to rush into spreading it, (but) more importantly, address the issue with facts.

"I will issue either a written or verbal statement on the matter tomorrow, Insya-Allah (God willing). I will have to look into it carefully because it is important to practise tabayyun (verification or validation of the truth) so as not to hurt the dignity of the people (that could be affected)," he said in a press conference today.

Dr Zulkifli also said he is willing to cooperate with other agencies in the investigation.

He advised the public to verify any information received before disseminating it.

The minister was asked to comment on whether the authorities plan to take further action following news reports on the issue.

According to the report, the cartel, which bribes officers within government agencies to ensure their operations run smoothly, import not just non halal-certified beef but also horse and kangaroo meat and pass them off as beef products.

These items were reportedly mixed with beef in warehouses nationwide upon arrival in Malaysia, before being sold to suppliers under the guise of being legitimate halal products.

Dr Zulkifli had previously said the government would take action against the manipulation of the halal certificate by the meat cartel and urged those with information to come forward and assist the authorities in investigation.
