Najib's appeal over RM1.69bil tax payment rescheduled to Aug 11

PUTRAJAYA: The hearing of Datuk Seri Najib Razak's appeal against the High Court's decision compelling him to pay RM1.69 billion to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has been rescheduled to Aug 11.

The former prime minister's counsel Wee Yeong Kang said the appeal was rescheduled due to the Movement Control Order (MCO).

The matter which was converted to case management today was conducted online before Court of Appeal deputy registrar Mariam Hasanah Othman.

The senior revenue counsel who acted for IRB were Al-Hummidallah Idrus and Muhammad Nabil Abdul Halim.

On July 22, last year, the High Court allowed the IRB's application for a summary judgement to be entered against Najib in its suit to recover RM1.69 billion in taxes from the latter for the period between 2011 and 2017.

Najib was ordered to pay the sum.

Subsequently, he filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal against the court's decision.

The board had on Feb 4 issued a bankruptcy notice against Najib following the Pekan MP's failure to pay the amont.

On June 25, 2019, the government, through IRB filed the suit against Najib asking him to settle the unpaid tax with interest at 5 per cent, a year from the date of judgment, as well as costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.

The government claimed that Najib had failed to pay his income tax from 2011 to 2017 within the stipulated 30-day period after assessment notices were issued by the IRB.
