Police nab man who fed baby alcoholic drink

BALIK PULAU: Police have detained a 19-year-old man in connection with a 30-second video of him allegedly feeding a baby liquor straight from the can.

Southwest police chief Superintendent Kamarul Rizal Jenal said the man – the father of the child – was picked up in Telok Bahang about 1.30pm today, shortly after a report was lodged against him.

"Checks showed the suspect has a criminal record with 14 previous entries and is a person under police surveillance in Teluk Bahang.

"As for the baby, we have sent the boy to hospital for further checks although he appears to be fine," he said today.

Kamarul said the man would be brought to the Balik Pulau magistrate's court for remand tomorrow to assist investigation into the matter.

The case is being probed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Earlier this afternoon, Malaysian Anti-Cheap Liquor Movement (MACLM) president David Marshel lodged a police report at the Prai police station in connection with the 30-second video.

David, who received the video this morning, said he believed the incident happened at a house in Teluk Bahang.

He called on police to take the necessary action according to provisions of the law and said such despicable acts should be stopped at all cost.

He stressed that the baby should be kept away from the man.

David also urged the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to conduct a blood test on the baby to ensure the child is not exposed to alcohol contents.
