BALIK PULAU: Police were forced to fire a shot to stop a van after a 5km chase near here this morning.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent Kamarul Rizal Jenal said in the 8am incident, a team of police was conducting Op Perdagangan at Jalan Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu.

He said, during the operation, they came across a van in a suspicious manner.

"We tried to stop the vehicle but to no avail. We were left with no choice but to pursue it until Jalan Datuk Ismail Hashim in Bayan Lepas.

"We were also forced to fire a shot at the front tyre when the suspect tried to run over a policeman before the vehicle skidded to the road shoulder," he said today.

Following that, Kamarul Rizal said they detained a 36-year-old man.

"Initial investigation found the suspect did not have a driving licence and had various criminal records.

"The suspect's urine test came back positive for Methamphetamine.

"He also had a wanted record in connection to Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drug Act back last year in the southwest district," he added.

Kamarul Rizal said during the 5km chase, several accidents also happened involving cars parked by the side of the road, with the suspect's van.
