Housewife fined RM10,000 for posting seditious remarks against King

KUALA LUMPUR: A 28-year-old housewife was fined RM10,000 in default nine months' jail for uploading seditious and insulting remarks against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Sessions judge M. M Edwin Paramjothy meted out the sentence against Nur Faizah Wahid after she pleaded guilty to the charges today.

Faizah had, via her Twitter account under the name 'Eija boo', made seditious remarks directed at the King about 8.30pm on May 22.

She was charged under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act 1948 which carries a maximum three years' imprisonment or RM5,000 fine or both.

The accused was also charged with uploading the same insulting remarks at the same time and date.

The remarks were read at the Cyber Crime and Multimedia Investigation Division Office at the Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Bukit Aman police headquarters, at the 27th floor of Menara KPJ in Wangsa Maju, here, at 8pm, on June 10.

The offence falls under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or up to a years' jail, or both, upon conviction.

The court imposed RM2,000 and RM8,000 fines for first and second charges, respectively.

Earlier, the mother of one pleaded for minimum sentence stating that she was remorseful of her action.

"I want to apologise to all Malaysians and will not repeat the same mistake again," she said.

However, deputy public prosecutor Nor Dayana Mohamad pressed for a deterrent sentence against the accused.
