KUALA LUMPUR: A 26-year-old woman was today charged with murdering her husband following a heated argument at their house in Batu Caves near here last week.
R. Umadevi nodded in understanding when the charge was read to her before Selayang magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni.
The accused, who used to work in a factory, was accused of murdering A. Murgan, 45, at a house near Kampung Laksamana about 11.30pm on Oct 19.
She was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
No plea was recorded.
Deputy public prosecutor Anis Farhah Ahmad Hilmi prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
The court set Nov 25 for mention.
On Wednesday, Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Zainal Mohamed Mohamed said initial investigations revealed that an altercation broke out when the victim accused his 26-year-old wife of infidelity and tried to attack her with a pair of scissors.
He said the suspect then grabbed an umbrella, broke it into half and retaliated by allegedly stabbing her husband in the abdomen with the sharp pole.
"We were alerted to the incident by the victim's neighbour who initially thought the deceased had committed suicide.
"We went to the scene and recovered the murder weapon at the back of the house," he was reported to have said.
