Foreigners fined for trying to bribe cop

IPOH: Two Bangladeshi workers were fined RM5,000 in default two months' jail by the Sessions Court here today for offering bribes to a policeman last year.

Ali Alhaj, 30, and Mia Md Somon, 25, pleaded guilty to an alternative charge read out in Hindi by a court translator before Judge, M. Bakri Abd Majid.

According to the charge sheet, the duo was accused of offering an RM100 bribe to Corporal Mohd Fuad Johari, who is attached to the Jelapang Police Station here, as an inducement not to take action against them under Section 6(1) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having valid documents.

The offence was allegedly committed in front of the RHB Bank Silibin branch here on November 16, 2021 about 10.30am.

They were charged under Section 214 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or fine or both, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Maziah Mansor prosecuted while both accused were not represented.
