Najib allowed extension, directed to file petition of appeal by today

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Court today ordered Datuk Seri Najib Razak to file his petition to appeal against the SRC International case decision by today.

The panel of judges comprising Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, Datuk P Nallini and Datuk Mary Lim Thiam Suan made the ruling after allowing Najib's application for an extension of 14 days to file the petition.

The former prime minister was supposed to file the petition by April 11 but his counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah had then filed for an extension of time to do so.

According to his supporting affidavit, Najib said he needed more time to prepare for the petition as the grounds of judgment prepared by the Court of Appeal judges contained 176 volumes and the defence only received them on March 31.

He said it was impossible for the defence to study the entire grounds and prepare a complete appeal petition in such a short time to address all the issues raised.

It was reported that the Court of Appeal had, on Dec 8, 2021, upheld the Kuala Lumpur High Court's decision to convict Najib of all seven charges of misappropriating RM42 million of SRC International funds.

High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali had, on July 28,2020, sentenced the former Umno president and Pekan member of parliament to 12 years jail and fined him RM210 million for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving the SRC International funds..

Following the Court of Appeal's decision to dismiss his appeal, Najib is seeking the Federal Court's intervention against his conviction and sentence involving the charges.
