Maqis seizes swine products from China

BUTTERWORTH: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) seized 9,180kg of swine products worth RM453,600 at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) here two days ago,

The items were confiscated as they were imported into the country without a permit.

State Maqis director Muhammad Ikram Abd Talib said checks on a container carrying 1,125 boxes of swine products from China showed that they were brought in without an import permit from Maqis.

"All the products, which have been canned, are estimated to be worth RM453,600.

"The case is probed under Section 11(1) of the Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 (Act 728), punishable under Section 11(3) of the same act," he said today.

Muhammad Ikram said enforcement action needed to be taken to prevent the spread of the African Swine Fever (ASF) virus into the country, which can affect the swine industry.

He said among the risky products in the spread of the ASF virus included swine sausage and swine products which have been canned.
