Not cool: 3 tonnes of ice cream imported from Taiwan without permit

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) has ordered the return of three tonnes of ice cream from Taiwan to its country of origin.

The consignment, estimated to be worth RM355,874.59, was seized and denied entry into the country after they were found to have been brought in without valid import permit.

"The consignment arrived at the Maqis' Port at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT).

"Upon routine checks, we found they were brought in without valid import permit. We then ordered their return to the country of origin," it said today.

Maqis said importing any animal-based products without valid permit was an offence under Section 11(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of RM100,000 fine or six years' jail.

"We want to remind all industry players to always refer to and comply with the country's import and export trade regulations. Any actions that do not adhere to these requirements will be considered an offence, and strict actions will be taken.

"No compromises will be granted to any company that violates legal stipulations to ensure the safety and reliability of the national food industry," it added.
