Housewife charged with uploading lewd photo on her Twitter account

KUALA LUMPUR: A 25-year-old housewife was charged at the Sessions Court here with uploading a lewd picture on her social media account last year.

Amira Nur Afiqah Agus Salim pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to her before Judge Norhasniah Abdul Razak.

The mother of one was accused of uploading the explicit picture onto her Twitter account with the intention of hurting others at 7.27pm on Sept 19 last year.

Amira's post was read at 7.50pm on the same date at a premises near Jalan Melati here.

The offence falls under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or jail up to one year or both upon conviction.

Earlier, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission prosecution officer Nur Nazhzilah Mohammad Hashim asked the court to impose RM5,000 bail against Amira.

However, counsel Adly Zulfadhly Zulkefly who represented the accused, pleaded for minimum bail of RM2,000 as his client needed to support her parents.

"My client's husband does not have a stable income as he works as a freelance video editor.

"We will also be writing a representation letter to the Attorney General's Chambers to dismiss the case," he said.

The court later set RM3,000 bail with one surety and fixed Aug 9 for mention.
