KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested the co-founder of the Crackhouse Comedy Club today to facilitate investigations over the incident of a woman who allegedly insulted Islam in a standup comedy routine at the same premises.
Sources said the 39-year-old man was arrested at about 1.30pm at a location in the city and will be placed at the Dang Wangi police headquarters lock-up.
The man is expected to be taken to court tomorrow morning for a remand application by the police.
"The arrests and investigations were carried out by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Prosecution and Law Division (D5)," a source told Berita Harian.
It was learnt that the man's arrest was made following several police reports made against him.
Bukit Aman is expected to issue an official statement on the matter soon.
Yesterday, Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias had said the operations of the comedy club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail had been temporarily suspended because the premises did not have an entertainment licence.
He said the club's owner had only been issued a restaurant and liquor licence, but not one related to entertainment activities.
The Penang Federation of Islamic Non-Governmental Organisations (GNIPP) had yesterday lodged a police report against the co-founder of the Crackhouse Comedy Club and asked authorities to investigate whether there was an element of spreading liberalism in the club.
A police report was also lodged by Persatuan Pengguna Semboyan Malaysia (PPSM) along with more than 50 non-governmental organisations against the man and his comedy club for allegedly insulting Islam and Malays in his performance.
