KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was taken to the Kajang Prison instead of the Sungai Buloh Prison as previously speculated.
He arrived at the Kajang Prison Complex at 6.47pm under tight security after the Federal Court today upheld his 12-year jail sentence and RM210 million fine for misappropriating RM42 million of SRC International funds.
A source earlier told Berita Harian that Najib was taken directly to the Kajang Prison from the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya.
"For now we can't confirm if Najib will be transferred to the Sungai Buloh Prison in the near future," the source said.
The former prime minister was under tight police security during the transport under the supervision of the Traffic Investigation Enforcement Department (JSPT) for traffic control, as well as the UTK, D9 and Bukit Aman's Crime Investigation Department.
Press members had earlier camped outside the Sungai Buloh Prison awaiting Najib's arrival.
The five-member bench led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat dismissed the former prime minister's appeal to set aside the conviction and sentence imposed by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on July 28, 2020.
The presiding judge at the time, Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali sentenced Najib to 10 years' jail on each of the three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) and each of the three counts of money laundering, and 12 years' jail and a RM210 million fine, in default five years' jail, in the case of abuse of position.
Najib, 69, had on Dec 8, 2021, failed to overturn the ruling after the Court of Appeal upheld the High Court's decision.
