KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here dismissed Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah's application for a stay of proceedings on the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) suit to recover RM9.41 million in alleged unpaid taxes.
Judicial commissioner Roz Mawar Rozain, when delivering the decision in a video conference today, also ordered Shafee to pay RM5,000 in costs to the IRB.
Shafee's counsel, Muhammad Farhan Shafee, told reporters after today's proceedings that the court had dismissed the application on grounds that there were no special circumstances for suspension.
He said the court then fixed Oct 6 for case mention.
The application to temporarily suspend the proceedings was filed by Shafee on Nov 3 last year, pending the disposition of his appeal to the Special Commissioners of Income Tax of Malaysia, apart from other special circumstances.
The board had filed a suit against Shafee on May 6 last year, claiming that the senior lawyer did not settle payments in tax arrears for five assessment years from 2011 to 2016, amounting to RM9,411,708.32 of unpaid taxes.
