Employer of horribly abused maid to be charged tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: A foreign maid who was allegedly tortured by her employer, including being scalded with hot water, burnt with an iron and beaten black and blue, for the past one and a half years will get her day in court tomorrow.

Though police have not released details, they confirmed that the 39-year-old's employer is expected to be charged with abuse under the Penal Code and for offences under the the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Trafficking Act/Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) 2007 at the Kuala Lumpur Courts.

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Amihizam Abdul Shukor said police had completed their probe on May 3 and referred the investigation papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers.

The employer, he said, will charged for various offences committed at a house in Jalan Hujan Emas 3, near Overseas Union Garden.

The 39-year-old victim was rescued by police on April 23, after one of the employer's neighbours suspected that she was being abused and called the police.

Amihizam said a police team sent to the house rescued the victim who was seriously injured.

"When the team arrived at the house, they found the maid seriously injured with her whole body scalded with hot water. There were also burn marks on her and she had a swollen and bruised face and eyes.

"She was rushed to the University Malaya Medical Centre for medical treatment and has been placed at a safehouse since," he said in a statement.

Amihizam said preliminary checks showed that the maid had been working at the house for about one and half years and throughout the period she had been subjected to constant abuse and torture by the employer, who was detained by police to facilitate investigations.

"Police also recovered several objects used to abuse the victim from the house, as part of case evidence," he said.

Amihizam urged the public to continue being the eyes and ears of the force to ensure safety, security and peace.

"Any information related to any criminal activities can also be channeled to the us via the Brickfields police hotline at 03-22979222 or City police hotline at 03-21159999. Or, any you may walk into the nearest police station," he said.
