KUALA LUMPUR: Fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, is believed to be hiding in Macau.
International broadcaster Al Jazeera reported the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as saying that several individuals had spotted Low in Macau.
"We believe that the individuals wanted for the 1Malaysian Development Bhd case, especially Low, are hiding in Macau.
"This was also confirmed by several individuals who have seen Low in Macau," said MACC as quoted by Al Jazeera.
The news outlet also quoted an official who said a suspect in the 1MDB and SRC International cases, who was recently arrested by MACC had been deported from Macau for overstaying a visa.
The suspect is believed to be Kee Kom Thiam, 51, an alleged associate of Low. He was arrested at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA) early this month by MACC.
"The investigation paper is focused on the assets belonging to Kee in Singapore and has been completed and submitted to the attorney-general's office for the next course of action."
The graft buster also said it had been gathering intelligence since 2018, when the government issued the travel ban on the 1MDB suspects.
Previously, the government said it was expediting the extradition of Low back to Malaysia through collaborations with foreign agencies.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman said the collaboration also involved MACC and included an Interpol Red Notice issued against Low in 2018.
