Cop found guilty of accepting bribes gets 3 years in prison, RM10,000 fine

SHAH ALAM: A police sub-inspector was sentenced to three years in jail for accepting bribes by the Sessions Court here.

Judge Rozilah Salleh also handed a RM10,000 fine in default six months imprisonment against B.P. Balacandran, 53, earlier this month.

Rozilah, in her judgment, said the prosecution had proved a prima facie case against the former Dengkil police station assistant chief.

Balachandran was charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

The accused is liable to a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine five times the bribe amount upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd 'Afif Ali prosecuted while counsel R. Sivahnanthan appeared for the accused.

Sivahnanthan applied for a stay of execution for his client pending an appeal at the High Court.

The court dismissed the application, which means that the accused will begin serving his jail term from the date of the decision (Jan 1).
