KUALA LUMPUR: A Myanmar national who was on the run for eight years after allegedly murdering his Bangladeshi friend was finally hauled to court to face his crime.
Ajib Kham, 39, was charged at the Ampang magistrate's court today with the murder of Uzzal Ali, 28, near Jalan 2/2, Pandan Cahaya, at about 8.30pm on Sept 5, 2015.
He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the death penalty.
Clad in a black shirt, the accused was calmed when he was ushered into the courtroom by several policemen today.
No plea was recorded from the accused and Magistrate Normaizan Rahim set Oct 3 for remention of the case pending the forensic report.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Ameera Sam Kamaruddin appeared for the prosecution while the accused, who was not offered bail, was unrepresented.
It was reported that Ampang police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the suspect who works as a garbage collector was arrested near Bukit Mertajam in Penang at 12.30am on June 23.
"According to the investigation, the suspect had approached the victim before they engaged in a scuffle at the latter's workplace.
"The suspect who was intoxicated during the incident is believed to have stabbed the victim multiple times," he said.
Mohd Azam said the victim was subsequently rushed to Ampang Hospital and was pronounced dead upon arrival due to his injuries.
