KULAI: A 24-year-old online trader pleaded not guilty for possessing two counterfeit RM100 notes, at the magistrate's court, here, today.
Cheoh Chuan Wang was accused for allegedly committing the offence at a petrol station at Batu 21, here, in Kulai on July 1, at 4pm.
The charges were read in Mandarin before Magistrate Azureen Sahira Sauffee Afandi.
Based on the charge sheet, Cheoh and an accomplice, who is still at large, allegedly attempted to use the fake RM100 banknotes with the intention of passing them off as legitimate currency.
He was charged under Section 489C of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code.
If found guilty, the accused could face a maximum imprisonment sentence of up to 10 years.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Eddlyn Wong informed the court that the accused's alleged charges were non-bailable offences but suggested a higher bail of RM15,000 should the court decide to grant bail.
"The accused is at risk of fleeing as there is another suspect involved in this case who is still at large," she said.
However, defence counsel Omar Kutty Abdul Aziz, requested for a lower bail amount.
The court granted a RM4,000 bail with one surety and set Aug 22 for the next hearing to facilitate document submission.
