KUALA LUMPUR: Former Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man has submitted a letter of representation for the prosecution to review his corruption charges.
Deputy public prosecutor Noralis Mat Rasyidah Azmi Kalai said the Attorney-General's Chambers (AG-C) received the letter from Azlan's lawyer via email this morning.
She said AG-C needed more time to review the letter as the Attorney-General needed to be briefed.
The prosecutor also informed the court that they will call a total of 20 prosecution witnesses to testify.
Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi then fixed Jan 12, next year, for mention of the case.
She also fixed a nine-day trial date for the case which will commence on July 18 next year.
On April 10, Azlan was charged with submitting false claims for accommodation and flight tickets to London, United Kingdom for five years.
Azlan had submitted false claims amounting to between RM230,230 and RM253,195 to the Perlis government for the period of five years, despite not making the travels.
All charges were framed under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 for submitting or certifying a document containing false details.
The offences are punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and fine of not less than five times the amount of the false claims.
Two days later, he was charged again with receiving a total of RM1.06 million, believed to be proceeds from illegal activities in multiple transactions between February 2014 and December 2017
The offences fall under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001.
It carries up to 15 years jail and a fine of at least five times the sum obtained from money laundering or RM5 million, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
Azlan was appointed as the ninth Perlis Menteri Besar after being elected as the Pauh assemblyman in the May 2013 General Election.
He was reappointed as the menteri besar after winning the Bintong state seat in the 14th General Election.
However, Azlan failed to retain the seat in GE15 in November last year after losing to the Perikatan Nasional candidate from Pas, Fakhrul Anwar Ismail, in a six-cornered contest.
