SUNGAI PETANI: A 13-year-old teenager was charged at the magistrate's court today with an attempted robbery of a 65-year-old e-hailing driver near Taman Keladi here on Monday.
The accused, whose identity was withheld, claimed trial when the charge was read before Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani.
The teenager, from Bandar Seri Astana here, is charged with committing an attempted robbery on e-hailing driver Lee Ang Hie at a roadside in Taman Keladi.
He is accused of committing the offence at about 6pm on Nov 27, 2023.
The charge was framed under Section 393 of the Penal Code which carries up to seven years' imprisonment and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.
The proceeding was carried out in-camera as the boy is protected under the Child Act 2001 for being an underaged.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Amirul Halimi Md Salleh prosecuted, while lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) Duratul Ain Mahmud Morshidi represented the accused.
The prosecution has proposed the court to set RM4,000 bail with one surety.
Khairatul Animah fixed the bail at RM2,000 and set Jan 17, 2024, for mention to allow the teenager to appoint a lawyer.
Earlier, the boy, clad in a red T-shirt, arrived at the court with his parents.
It was reported earlier that the accused had stabbed the driver near Taman Keladi, Sungai Petani on Monday.
